August Is Here

Published on July 28, 2014, by in Blog, News.

Hello Everyone!

August is just about here! In a few days the year will be half over. Where has the time gone?

Coming up in August we are going to have two events and a closure. On Monday August 4th the Dojo will be closed for the long weekend. Have some fun and take a break! The first event will be Kata Seminar on Thursday August 23rd from 7:45pm to 9:45pm. The Katae we will be learning is Urban-Han. We don’t cover this Kata in the regular curriculum but it gives a very interesting perspective and Katas and on it’s creator Peter Urban. It is open for Adults and Teens. Sigh up sheet will be in the Dojo starting tomorrow. If you have any questions please feel free to ask me. The next event in August will be our next Grading happening on Saturday August 23rd at 4:00pm. It’s looking like a large group so I will need a few assistants this time around. If you know you will be around please let me know you can help. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

September is going to be a busy month! On Saturdays we will be adding a class for the 12-16 year olds and adding a kids senior belt class during the week. We don’t quite have any senior kids yet but we should by the end of the year. I also see blue in the near future for a few adults so keep up the great work! I am not sure of the days yet but in September we will also be having a Kids Board Breaking Seminar and an Adult Board Breaking Seminar. As always they are an absolute blast so once September rolls around make sure to sign up early!

This weeks sign is a good one. I know I can let myself get dismayed when obstacles creep up in my way, but if you are doing something that you love or going after a goal that you really care about, we have to find a way around/over/through them. Once we get to the other side, it’s always worth it. Thanks again I am looking forward to seeing everyone this week. Be well and have a great one,

Getting Close To Back To School

Published on July 16, 2014, by in Blog, News.

Hello Everyone,

First I have to apologize for not having the bullying section up yet. I am waiting for replies to the services I want to link to but will have it up before the end of the month.

We are just about half way through the Summer and I am already starting to seeing “Summer Fatigue” setting in with parents and kids alike. Just make sure to get out of the house every now and then and don’t spend all day playing League of Legends! If anyone has some spare time and wants to work out or practice keep in mind we have an open practice space in the basement. As long as we are open students are always welcome to come in and use it! If you aren’t sure that we are open feel free to call and double check.

We are coming up on the August Long weekend, and the Dojo will be closed Monday August 4th for the holiday. So keep in mind there will not be classes that Monday. Have fun!!!!

We have a Grading this weekend. It has shaped up to be a small one, but a great group of kids. It will be this Saturday at 4:00pm right here at the club. If you are attending the Grading make sure to bring all your sparring equipment if you have it. The August Grading hasn’t been set in stone yet. But it will either be on the 16th or 23rd of August. That is looking like a large one with a lot of groups from little ones to teens and even a few adults! It will be a lot of fun to see such a large group working together in the club. I am excited and hope everyone else is too!    🙂

Next month we are going to be having an Adult Seminar for an advanced Kata we don’t do as part of our regular curriculum, Urban Han. It was developed by Peter Urban and is quite different from the forms we practice in class. The seminar will be open to teens and adults alike. We will have the sign up info in the club on Saturday as there is a fwe more details to work out time and date wise. Keep those eyes peeled!

This weeks sign is paraphrased from Bruce Lee. Great piece of advice I try and remind myself of from time to time. The only limits we have are the ones we place on ourselves and be careful how much and where you limit yourself. Those limits can creep across into other areas of your life. Thanks again and I can’t wait to see everyone this week,

Let’s Talk About Bullies

Published on July 7, 2014, by in Blog, News.

Hello Everyone!!!

Busy week so lets dive in.

Lately I have been talking a lot about how to deal with bullies. Many parents have been asking about it as well as more than a few kids. It’s a hard subject to deal with, for parents as well as kids. The scariest part about bullies are we can’t be there to help our kids when it is happening. On Friday I will be adding a section to the site with a few resources for everyone to use. I will also be talking to all the kids about things we should do if we are getting bullied and how to deal with a bully. The one thing I want to say here is for all the parents. Make sure to talk to your kids about when and if you want them to use what they are learning. It’s scary to be picked on, but at least if kids know you are on their side when they need to defend themselves it makes it easier for them do so.

Heads up for after August, we will be changing the schedule around. Most classes will remain the same the affected classes will only be shifted by an hour or so. They won’t switch days, but there will be a couple of adults classes that we may have to remove. If you have any input please let me know soon!

Just a reminder that our next Grading is on Saturday July 19th at 4:00pm. The group is going to be a good size and a lot of fun! Bring your cameras and as always it is encouraged to bring family and friends. It’s always free for anyone you bring.

Here is this week’s sign. Just remember, some times you have to take your time. Have a great week and I look forward to seeing everyone this week.     🙂

Back From The Break

Published on July 2, 2014, by in Blog, News.

It was a great Canada. We even avoided the rain (mostly) and the fireworks went off with out a hitch. Great to see so many people going out to celebrate the country’s birthday.

This month we have our next Grading. It will be on Saturday July 19th at 4:00pm. As always, anyone looking to move up should come to class and show me what you’re got.

The bring a friend contest has ended as well. We will be announcing the winners for the contest next week. It was pretty close, but a few people pulled out in front of the others.

Once again if there is a subject anyone is looking to learn more of in  Seminar let me know soon. I will be posting next week with the details for the next kids and next adults Seminars.

And of course the weekly sign. Be careful what you choose to keep. If something is not useful, or worse, is a hindrance don’t keep it. Especially if it is something taking up room in your mind. I am looking forward to seeing everyone this week!

I have finally fixed the Dojo computer. Again. Lol. So, back to the weekly sign and news. Here we go.

Please note the Dojo will be closed on July 1st for Canada Day, but well will be open on Monday June 30th.

As we head into the summer be carefully and get that sun screen out. I have had some bad burns in the past and hope everyone is taking precautions.

Over the last month and a half we have had the Bring A Friend Contest has been going on and the last couple of weeks it has really been heating up. Because of the interest, I am going to extend the contest to June 28th. I will announce the winners next week so if you have anyone else to bring in you better hurry.

Of course this weekend we will have to Summer’s first Grading on Saturday June 28th at 4:00pm. It is looking like a small but strong group. If you are free and want to help out let me know. I am going to need a couple of assistance. Any help is always appreciated.

I am going to have two seminars in August, one for kids and one for adults but the topics are not set yet. If anyone has any requests or ideas, please run them by me and if there is interest I will be more than happy to offer it.

A bit of a heads up, in October the Dojo will be celebrating be open for 2 years!!! It’s going to be a huge mile stone and hope everyone can help the club celebrate. We will have Halloween/Anniversary Party. We will also Be offering BBM. What is BBM? Well it’s not Black Berry Messenger, it is a special offer for new and current students looking to save the most on their training in the long term. That is all I am going to say about it for now, but I will be dropping more details the closer we get.

Here’s is this week’s sign. It is not verbatim, but the first student to identify the source gets a free Dojo Button. I am looking forward to seeing everyone and training hard!

End Of The Month

Published on April 28, 2014, by in Blog, News.

Hello Everyone!,

May is just about the start. The weather is great and getting even better, the snow has been banished and everyone is getting outside more. Watch out though, there is supposed to be a lot of rain for the next week. Break out those umbrellas if you haven’t yet.

This weekend we had a great Grading! Small group but very strong. We should have a few more Green Belts soon (fingers crossed). We will be having our next Grading on Saturday May 24th at the usual time of 4:00pm. Start getting ready now if you want to be in it and show me what you got in class! It’s looking like the next Grading will be a big one so I may be asking some senior belts for help over the next few weeks.

In May we have the first true sign of Summer, Victoria Day Long Weekend. The Dojo will be closed on Monday May 19th for the Holiday so take a break that long weekend, you’ve earned it!

And of course, we are starting our Bring A Friend Contest next week! We will be recording each time a student brings a new friend to class. Mid-June we will tally everything and see who wins! There will be a first, second and third place prizes. We will post all the details in the Dojo this week so keep those eyes peeled and ask Sensei for the details.

Here is this week’s sign. If you’re are feeling frustrated with where you are right now, don’t worry too much. Remember, everyone starts at the bottom. But you don’t have to stay there.

Hello Everyone,

I hope everyone had a great Easter Long Weekend. For those that do not celebrate Easter I hope you had a great Long Weekend. The Dojo is back to a normal schedule and this weekend on Saturday April 26th we have our next Grading. Looks like there will be a very strong group of adults and a another strong group of kids all looking to move up. We even have a few teenagers who should be moving up with the adults. It is going to be an interesting Grading.

Nothing much coming up. We will be having another Grading in May but no Seminar. Looking like a quiet month.

Late Post, Keep Those Eyes Open

Published on April 2, 2014, by in Blog, News.

Hello Everyone!

Sorry for the late post this week. I broke the Window Sign so no weekly sign. It will be back up and fixed for Monday.

A few reminders and updates: The GRADING that was scheduled for April 19th has been moved to April 26th. As the 19th is part of Easter Weekend we have moved it for everyone’s convenience. Looks like a strong group of adults and a few older kids this time around. Great group! Keep practicing if you want to be in. We still have a few more weeks!

The Adult Nunchuck Seminar is on April 10th from 7:45pm to 9:45pm. If you aren’t attending keep in mind there will be no adult class that night so take a break and relax.

On Monday, we are going to start our Easter Colouring Contest! If you are a kid and like candy keep those eyes peeled! All the details will be posted tomorrow.

I know there has been a lot of thing happening in the neighborhood lately. Just be mindful of your surroundings. Especially if you have children! Keeps those eyes peeled and don’t let them out of your sight. And if anyone sees anything that makes them nervous in the neighborhood please report it. It’s our job to help keep where we live safe for those we love. Thank you everyone and I look forward to seeing everyone this week! Be well,
